“A TOUGH PILL TO SWALLOW”

“A Tough Pill to Swallow” is an editorial-style, conceptual illustration depicting a heart attack. Compositionally, this illustration is made up of a medicine box that reads: STRESS LESS: MAXIMUM STRENGTH STRESS RELIEF, as well as a pill package that contains common causes of heart disease (ie. alcohol, unhealthy food and cigarettes), a torn off pill packet and a hand holding a “pill” in the form of a miniature soda cup.

The take-away here is this: people suffering from heart attacks are using unhealthy, triggering habits such as poor diet, drinking and smoking, to decompress from their stressful lives. One cause of heart disease is being alleviated using another and it’s leading to an epidemic that kills more than half a million people in the U.S. each year.
